CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Daddy Issues

Without the ability to pre-pick his firing points he'd have to recall where and how many rounds he used, but it wasn’t an issue. Ruben wasn't prone to the problems associated with adrenaline rush any more than a West Hollywood gigolo did with the gag reflex. He'd remember. Still in a crouch, he leaned slightly to his right and lined up the sight at the base of the man's skull. The H&K USP had a sweet double action on the trigger. While he didn't care much for the weight the suppressor added to the barrel, the pistol's slide made more noise ejecting the casing than the round going off. He perforated the external occipital, and the shithead jerked slightly forward. Ruben confirmed he'd hit his mark from the large red lumpy stain that formed on the three quarter ply the guy squatted against.

Not one to dawdle, Ruben shifted left and continued his search for the others. He stayed low, relieved his knees didn't bother him, but his quads started to burn. Oh, man, I gotta get back to the gym. He moved in behind the fidgety fuck who kept popping up to check the trailer. Ruben didn't want to use more than one slug but this nervous Nellie wouldn't sit still. He also noticed the firearm. Ruben didn't see what the first guy carried. Nellie, however, had a wheel gun and not a Saturday night special like the one Ruben had in his pocket. A nice one by the look of it, a .38 or .357.

How does someone with a derelict’s fashion sense get the coin for a shooter like that? A question Ruben followed with, Oh, shit...I hope these guys aren't fuzz doin' some moonlighting. He discounted that notion by the way Alyssa had been treated. Still, cops crooked enough to get in this deep were liable to do anything. One way to find out...not fool proof...still...

Ruben took a bead and in a voice just loud enough for Nellie to hear said, “Hey!”

Spinning on his right heel Nellie stood straight up assuming a picture perfect isosceles stance, left hand wrapped over right. Worse still, he didn't start shooting until he'd acquired a target. God damn it! I thought so. Ruben ducked and rolled left, not worried about getting hit. Nellie was scared and like most folks, cops included, he kept firing until the hammer clicked on empties. Had he lived through this teaching moment he would have done better the next time. While Nellie struggled to break the cylinder for reload Ruben walked up and put a bullet in his forehead.

“Not like being on the range, is it, Sport?” He went back into a crouch, heading to his left again before the others could place him. At the same time he cracked the suppressor loose and spun it off, slipping it back in his vest. He didn't like the balance with it on, especially when he had to shoot and move, or in this case, shoot while moving.
